How to install NWDS

SAP Netweaver Developer Studio is an Java IDE that based on Eclipse platform. It includes the standard Eclipse features and SAP features. SAP NetWeaver Developer Studio provides several features for composing and developing business applications. You can select the features according to the components you have installed on your AS Java of the Composition Environment.

Before you start to install NWDS, make sure the NWDS and Netweaver server have the same version. It can keep you away from some werid issues.

When you have a central AS Java, you can access the update site from below URL:

http://<host>:<httpport>/updatesite

Make sure that the update site is properly installed and that the post-installation activities for the update site have already been performed. For more information, see section Post-Installation Activities -> Configuring the IDE Update Site -> in the installation documentation, available at:

http://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/sdn/nw-ce.

SAP also provides a standard update site for netweaver CE. It can be visited at: https://nwds.sap.com/swdc/downloads/updates/netweaver/nwds/ce/ .But I recommend you to use the update site in your AS Java Server. It will make sure the version can be matched.

Please follow the steps in the update site. It will guide you how install a NWDS with required features. I copy the guide in this post for reference.

Welcome to the SAP NetWeaver Developer Studio (NWDS) Update Site which contains the basic installer and the features for the SAP NetWeaver Composition Environment 7.1 Developer Studio releases.

NWDS Installation Procedure

1. Download the NWDS_platform.zip file which contains the SAP NetWeaver Developer Studio Platform Installer.

2. Unzip NWDS_platform.zip and start the installer IDESetup.exe. Follow the on-screen instructions of the installer. During the installation you are asked for the update site location. Please accept the preconfigured URL that points to this update site.

The Developer Studio is started automatically when the installation dialog is finished. During startup you are asked for the workspace folder for the Developer Studio.

If you already had a Developer Studio installed on this client, you need to specify a different workspace than the one you used for the previously installed Developer Studio version. This is also true if you have uninstalled the previous version already. Uninstalling a Developer Studio does not remove the content you created in the workspace folder that includes the preferences of the Developer Studio and maybe projects you stored locally.

The next prompt during start up is to confirm the network connections. On the network connection preference page you can specify if you connect to the Internet directly or you can configure your proxy. The network connection settings must be configured so that the Developer Studio can connect to the update site. There can be misleading error messages if the proxy settings are not correct (for example, parsing error-premature end of file). When such an error message is displayed, you have to proceed with the steps described in section Troubleshooting.

The installer installs the kernel of the Developer Studio. The kernel contains Eclipse and a few SAP additions, but is not equipped with the SAP features necessary for the Composition Environment. In order to install the required SAP features you have to install the SAP features with the following update procedure.

3. The installer starts SAP NetWeaver Developer Studio automatically and invokes the Eclipse Update Manager where you can select the available NWDS features that you want to add to your installation.
If you install a previous NWDS release, you have to disable the option Show the latest version of features only in the Eclipse Update Manager wizard dialog to be able to select the previous versions of NWDS features.
