SAP Determining the Picking Location
The sales goods must be picked from a particular storage location when delivery note is created. The goods are also issued from the storage location that is specified in the delivery. If picking activity is carried out using the warehouse management, the storage location in the delivery note determines which warehouse is responsible for picking.
Delivery item category determines whether the item is relevant to picking activity. For example, text items are not relevant for picking and you do not need to specify a storage location. Check box ‘Relevant for pick’ controls whether the item category is relevant for picking.
Picking storage location is not available in the sales order, because the person responsible for processing sales order do not have enough information to specify the storage location. When the delivery is created, there are general two methods to determine the picking storage location.
1. Determine the picking location automatically
Each delivery type has its own storage location determination rule. The determination rules are defined by system and you cannot change them in the customizing. The following picking rules exist for determining the picking location.
a. MALA enables you to determine the picking location according to: Storage condition, Delivering plant of the delivery item, Shipping point of the delivery.
b. RETA enables you to determine the picking location according to: Storage location, Delivering plant of the delivery item, Situation. This rule is particularly important for retail scenarios.
If the rule is set to MALA, go to transaction code OVL3 - Picking Location Determination. Specify the combination of shipping point, plant and storage conditions to determine the storage location.
The storage condition is stored in the material master record. You will find the specification on the tab Plant data / Warehouse 1 for a material in the field Storage condition.
2. Specify the picking location manually.
In the delivery, you can either specify the storage location for each individual item or you can enter it on an overview screen for several items.
